WEEK 4

Kia Ora,

It has been wonderful to see the sun but the wind has been so cold....it is time to get out our winter clothes!

This week we put on our lab coats and did an experiment that Desharne chose.

We put dirty coins in some coca cola and we are going to see if there is a reaction with the coke and the coins.

Here are some of our thoughts...
Im wondering if the coke will disappear?
When the coin comes out will it have the delicious smell of the coke?
The coin will get so clear that the whole coin might become clear!
Maybe it will become clean?

Discussing our coins and what is on them.

Using a magnifying glass....you can see so much more!

Putting the coke in...

Do you remember us telling you about our visit from Naoko?

This week we put into practise what she had taught us.

When we were doing our experiment with the volcano Miss Hudson told us about another thing that we could do using baking soda, so this week we made Hokey Pokey to see if we could make the connection.

And we did!!

The baking soda reacted with the warm sugary mixture just the same way as the baking soda reacted with the vinegar.

It went all frothy and changed colour.

When we ate it we found it was very crunchy and if we left it in our mouth it felt all fizzy.

Adding the golden syrup...

Everything is starting to melt...

Adding the baking soda made the mixture change colour and then into a solid

Todays chef was Ryan...he chose spaghetti in tomato sauce .

We had to use the can opener to get the spaghetti out.

Then we put the mixture in a pot to heat it through before putting it on our plates.

Getting the lid off...

Chef Ryan in action!!

Have a superb weekend everyone!

Week 3

Kia Ora,

What a week we have had!!!!

On Tuesday we had a visit from Naoko who is a massage therapist.

She had a range of bottles which had essential oils in them.
We got to smell them and try and work out what they were.
Essential oils are made from plants and they smell absolutely delicious.

We all got to have a foot bath that had lavender oil in it.  It was lovely and warm and some of us didn't want to take our feet out of it!!!!

Putting the lavender oil into the foot bath....

Being told all about essential oils....

Time for a smell...

I wonder what this one is?

After the foot bath we were all treated to a hand massage that had the essential oil chamomile in the oil mixture.
It was so relaxing.....we all loved it and we are hoping that Noako will come back again to see us!!!

Next week we are going to practise doing hand massages on each other....we can't wait!!!

Desharne gave Naoko some flowers and thanked her for giving up her time to come and be with us.

This term we are being scientists and will be participating in doing science experiments.

Today we put on our lab coats and got busy with our first experiment.

Jacob chose the experiment for today...Volcano in the sandpile!

First we had to go and collect the sand from the sand pit and make a mountain shape from it.

Reading up what we have to do....

Collecting the sand....

Making our mountains
Then we made a hole in the top of the mountain and put baking soda and food colouring in it .
Next we added vinegar....and guess what happened?
We had a reaction...the vinegar made the baking soda bubble and erupt from our mountains just like a real volcano.

We all tried the experiment twice...for the second one we used more baking soda and vinegar to see if that made a difference....and it did.

After finishing our experiment we all watched a real volcano erupting in Hawaii.....it was scary!!

Miss Hudson came in and said that the same thing happens when you make hokey pokey so we think that we will try that next week to see if we get the same reactions as we did today.

Week 2

It has been a small team again this week with Gabby and Jasiah away to camp.
It was one very excited team that went out to greet them on their return yesterday!!
They have both had an awesome time at camp.

Have you every played pin the tail on the donkey at a birthday party?

This week we played pin the tail on the cat....it was so much fun...even Gayle had a turn .
No-one was able to get the tail exactly where it should have been.

Have You Filled A Bucket Today?

We have been reading this book...it is about filling other peoples bucket by doing good deeds, saying kind words and generally being a very nice person.
You can be a bucket filler or a bucket dipper....we decided it was best to be a bucket filler.
People can fill our buckets too...or dip into them.

If you haven't read this book we recommend that you do....it is a guide for daily happiness for everyone.

Chefs choice for this week was pizza.......thank you Jacob.

Preparation...

Cheese grating....

Chef in action....

Ready for the oven...

Chef for a day!

Time to eat....

The sun is out.....lets hope that it stays like that for the weekend!!
